LW – Chapter 17

Chapter 17

It took some sacrifice to work out the kinks, but I made a big defense gain, when I set up a whole thorn wall plaza around the giant hornet nest guarding the only way up into my cliff meadow zone. This would restrict some of the flow of the goblins going through that spot, but also not restrict it so much that they would try to find another way up. And it would lend some defensive ability to the giant hornets. In effect, it would be aiding them.

I couldn’t cut off the flow there, because if I did that and the goblins went elsewhere to try to dig a way up to this position then that would be less defensible. As it stands, it was a very narrow and steep approach coming up the mountain slope up to this crown of the mountain meadow. This meant, there was only that one spot that let you approach and come up. (Maybe that’s why my landing capsule was placed here also). And this was why the goblins didn’t try to go a different route; because they couldn’t.

It was a classic mountain top defensible flat position with the ultimate view of the surrounding areas.

It cost me a good 480 mana to setup…

It was a risk. The monster giant hornets weren’t my allies. And they never would be. But I could program those vines to not think of the giant hornets as enemies and only take on other targets as enemies.

And…to a point, they were better neighbors than the goblins! I could use them against the goblins even though they didn’t like it, and didn’t like me. It was kind of cool but devious in a military tactics way.

Despite the risks, this plan’s gains are enormous.

I’m now getting XP of EVERY giant hornet kill that’s near their nest and a teamwork bonus. Odd, because it still doesn’t show me as ‘friendly’ or ‘ally’ status with the giant hornets. (Although this separate maze section where I am will hurt and capture them.) And the teamwork bonus does vary a bit still. But its a constant flow of XP; with the hornets always taking in tons of food as they have tons of foragers. (This hive is really big. Am I going to have to worry about it getting too big later on?)

The main point of caging of the entrance zone area is also making is so not very many goblins are even able to approach me! They have to take on risk to get through the giant hornets bottleneck. And to do that, they have to lose soldiers and fighting power. Even the stealthers will sweat a bit trying to get through there; though they probably can get through.

Nice.

This will curb the goblin arsonists.

I also found that the forested area surrounding the meadow on the mountain does have other living things in it. Monsters of some kind, and animals both. Sometimes I heard combat in the tall trees and on the slopes, but I haven’t been able to identify the causes. The foliage of the brush and trees is too thick yet. But at least I know there’s danger there also. And I don’t want to risk exploring it too much.

I lost time figuring that out before going to sleep also.

I woke up around 4:02 AM when there’s a string of XP awarded to me. And this is indicating that there’s a lot of goblins at the giant hornet nest zone trying to pass it by.

Interesting… you’d think they’d learn their lesson but they don’t. And the XP awards coming through accidentally also function as a radar letting me know to ‘get ready’.

I groaned inwardly knowing I’d have to go check it.

The day continued…

I kept building. But for today their invasionary force retreated, probably took on too much shock and to adjust their plans.

Several days passed.

I added another hidey hole secret room. I also put secret trap door pits with false floor panels in them, in case I need to hide something. With magic I can craft these so well you can’t tell there’s a secret trap door there. But its tight and small where you have to curl up into a ball; not comfortable but if I need to hide someone I can.

Also added, are more hallways, dead ends, and alleys throughout the maze. I’d managed to increase the size quite a bit since there was a break from the goblin advances. (I’m sure they haven’t given up. They just are trying to figure out a new approach and get more help probably. So I’ll not let up my defensive building.) The amount of territory absorbed by the maze has grown quite a bit since I didn’t have to focus on curbing distractions. I also set up two canals from the brook to help with fire risk mitigation; although its not enough yet. I’ll need to add more of these later.

I managed to do this by also use critical effect create water effects a few times to expand the pools, that branch off the brook. These I also lined with gravel to help with keeping the water level from dropping and preserve resources. I don’t have a full moat yet, but I’m working on it. I’ll have to deepen the brook system canals though; right now they are mostly only about a foot deep in most places. I only have about a bit over a hundred feet of moat, which happens only to gain me an extra 10 feet when I get a critical hit cast of the create water effect, and this also scoops out the bottom making these small 10 foot wide squares of water quite deep. (I don’t know how to make them other shapes than square 10 foot by 10 foot blocks yet.)

It does look weird that everything I make is permanent and square shaped, but oh well, haha. Someday I’ll learn other shapes than squares…

Square block designs right now actually help with keeping track of measurements and keeping the lines and designs straight and clear right now. So I like that.

Ah! Wolves incoming!

Blocked a pack of wolves trying to enter the maze at 11:03 AM. All slaughtered.

Giant hornets followed them like before (these are smart to do that, but in this case its futile), at 11:09 AM.

Mutant grasshopper (4 foot long) came in in singles, one after another.

!

Captured 6 of them. But then I realized if I didn’t execute them fast they have the ability to chew themselves out of the traps! These are a danger to my skills. And they clearly aren’t normal grasshoppers with a strong desire for blood and flesh, not just vegetation. (Did someone create these? Or did they evolve?)

Over the rest of the day, most of the rest of my monster encounters are small fries. I dislike the mutant mosquitoes however. Those are a good foot long and quite a threat when they come around. They fly fast also making them hard to hit, without the traps. Normal humans must have a hard time with them.

In the next few days there was no change with the fairies.

But I also added two dead end rooms today. These two have closeable and lockable doors on them; unfortunately still wood however. Metal designs take up too much mana.

Basically my whole maze is full of traps. And there isn’t very much that doesn’t have root vine thorny mesh whatever anywhere. Yet running into dead end rooms I’d learned can be especially deadly to goblins, as they then figure out they have to go back the way they came. I’d also added several corridors with them.

The giant hornets had also learned to kill the goblin arsonists. They are smarter than I thought. They also see that them getting burned out is a problem, and the land being destroyed is trouble also. I think this evolution was sparked by the goblin arsonists going after their den too much, to try to clear a path. It was unexpected but works in my favor.

I also have developed a way of making and growing tree seedlings into gigantic humongous very tall mana fed trees in a short time. With my mana power they skyrocket and grow so fast that their bark is damaged in the process. And then I set up a rope trap setup that then pulls prey into the tops of the trees. These are useful because I can setup a vine rope snare hidden in grass for quite a long way, from which the mana trap activates, and then pulls the prey away from their party up to 10 feet per 2 levels, and into the air. And when separated from their party it makes things a lot easier to hunt goblins.

But yesterday a goblin champion showed up with a bugle call to challenge me to a duel to the death. He was probably around level 30 I believe.

!

This worries me a lot, and I need to find a way to beat him before he kills me. Everything changed when the goblin champion showed up. I can no longer openly go near the exits of my mazes. I have avoided accepting his challenge. And he’s smart enough to stop at the entrance of the maze without going in. It would be a lot of trouble if he went in, but he’s wary enough to not let himself be killed or worse.

Whew!

Level 30?

I can’t beat him. But luckily my reputation is big enough to keep him from walking in blindly. He insists on a duel outside the maze on the meadow.

But he’ll be back tomorrow also, and will continue to challenge me while the goblins build up their morale.

I’d also figured out a way to make camouflaged mini-tree houses in a tree by growing it with mana, with the tree high up enough and by tweaking how the branches grow and spread. This is a project I’ll do to create ways of doing more hit and run tactics with the goblins. And with enough of these connected over the maze I should even be able to go all over around them without them being able to go after me.

Still…it has a major flaw in that I don’t think it would be safe to put myself in one of those tree top huts, given that you could burn someone to death in one quite easy or make them fall to death. For now I can swing traps from the tops easily, magic traps that is. Non-magic traps from those are beyond me still.

Tomorrow I’ll set up the first tree house…but I think I’ll fumble and mess up a few times before I get it right, as I have to grow the wood. Or cut it, and nail it.

The never ending stream of goblin warriors continues to try to get up here and kill me. Its distracting from trying to make some research breakthroughs.

The giant hornet nest is suffering a lot of losses recently. But what they haven’t lost is leveling up a lot. They look stronger than before and are developing a natural armor plating skin ability. Some of them easily kill goblins now. And they are making up for their losses in other ways. (Good. I won’t have to intervene to save them.)

I did an experiment yesterday also where I have been leaving a bucket of item create magic created honey near the edge of the cliff. The giant honey bees came to get it yesterday and today both. The experiment will be to see if I can try to tame some of them. I don’t know if it will work. The giant bees seem to be levels 20 to 25, I think but can’t prove. And they have a natural enmity with the giant hornets, as well as some weak spots against them. but I can’t quite get to their nest since I don’t have a flying ability and it seems they live under the lip edge of the cliffs. (Too hard to get too.)

I ran into a giant rabbit monster also recently. (Horned rabbits.) These are solo monsters but anywhere from level 20 to level 40. I’ve been avoiding them. Their lances I saw gutting a whole platoon of goblins.

One of them almost went into my maze dungeon zone. I was relieved that he didn’t. I lack the skills to fully fight these, since at that level of power they’d be able to tear through the vine trap magic that I’d been relying on.

I captured 2 ants yesterday in the improved root traps. They almost trashed that whole room trying to get free. These are believed to be about level 30 in combat strength, and put me at a huge disadvantage. I managed to kill them both. But it was a mess and took a lot of mana to repair the damage. The room was difficult to repair also.

Life is hard.

I’m beginning to see that everything is stronger than people now.

“Hello? Are you there?” I heard the telepathic voice of the one fairy.

“I’m here!” I tried to answer.

But she fell back asleep again.

It seems that they can’t stay awake long because of how weak they are.

Twice I’d made contact with one of the fairies today, but each time it was about the same, and just them trying to greet me. I think one of them will wake up soon, but probably not the other.

Their health isn’t stable though…I fear I may lose the other one.

I have to run back and forth often now because my maze is getting a bit bigger and harder to catch things when they first come in. (The best way to stomp enemies is to help my traps with my own magic and attack skills together. So I have to work hard to know everything going on and stomp it fast.)

I slumped against the new tree trunk in my maze at the end of the 5th goblin patrol today near 5:30 PM.

“So tired…” I thought.

Ping!

I leveled up! Finally!

Slowly I’m gaining strength. Its not easy to in this world. Plus, it requires huge amounts of XP to even get anything in this world.

New skills; Stardust(??)

Huh weird…

Both this level up and the previous one its giving me some +1 bonus to stats, except this last point I couldn’t choose where it goes and instead it went right into my appearance going up. I guess there’s worse things in life that could happen to me, but I wished I could have put it in INT or WIS instead.

And when my CON hit 80, it gave me a bonus +1 to health regen per day! This I like but its probably useless, if I already have a heal skill.

Well, maybe not useless as I can now take a bit more damage without dying. I also feel healthier and stronger in body.

But I’m amazed at how many cool things are happening to me.

Stardust? What kind of skill is this?

I need to test it…

I looked around…

Hm…OK I can target some rocks in the brook and try it out. I did so with my skill tab open and clicked on the skill. There’s a whoosh of energy and then there’s some magic missiles hitting the rocks from the sky.

An attack skill! Yes! I needed this!

Although I was surprised that the missiles seemed to come from space like meteors instead of my hands. And unfortunately its a weak attack skill. Its foundation is basically for any entry level beginner mage to acquire and use, which means it won’t be able to progress very far. (But this is probably why the system is letting me have it? Because its too small to really worry about?)

I double checked the status screen’s combat screen for the stats on the effects of the skill I just did.

It seems that the small energy missile skill isn’t very high powered. It cost me (-7 mana), and it did about +2 damage per level.

Hm…that’s not very powerful at all.

I decided to try it a few times to test it again. Each time its fluctuating between 2 damage per level. And when I tested my minor burn wave skill again, its doing a bit more damage now also. And now I’m comparing them also.

I don’t have as much affinity with flame. So technically if its a single target monster the Stardust technique is better. But the Minor Flame Wave technique has a chance to hit all nearby monsters within about 3 to 5 feet of the initial target! Plus, the wave area arc of the flame wave is bigger than before, where before it had only been at 2 to 3 feet of flames hitting other targets nearby!

‘I’m getting stronger!’

Things never let up with the goblin invasions. But now I’m able to fight back easier. I believe over 70 goblins were executed in my traps alone, not counting whatever the giant hornets did.

I found a way to strengthen the create water casts with extra mana per cast, and this can increase the chances of a critical hit, which then expands the brook area. Today I grew the brook’s moat ammenment area by an extra +20 feet! I hope to eventually encircle all the maze with it! Plus, as a life element mage my brook looks heavenly, pure, and clean of the clearest water I’d ever seen in my life! You can literally see all of the fish, swimming through out it!

I keep working…

By the end of today I’d managed to create +1 more plaza room. As well as more maze space added.

So that’s up to 5 plaza rooms now, I think. Its also getting harder to remember all the turns in the maze as its getting bigger.

Why do I keep putting off the experiment to create some tree monsters?

I meant to do that today but got caught up in goblin killing. Its getting too hard to keep track of everything I’m doing, so I need some assistants to help run my maze.

Why do the goblins keep coming at me? They are just throwing away troops.
