LW – Chapter 6

Had recent crash from trying to fix bugs. Please excuse the mess while we clean up.

Chapter 6

Morning breaks.

I yawned.

I’d been using a piece of paneling from the rocket as a blanket (made of a hybrid tin or steel). I’m also in the dugout pit that I’d been using as a shelter.

“Hey about time you got up. My shift is almost over. So I’m glad you got up before…” she stopped in mid-sentence.

“What did you say?” I sat up straight.

“I wish I could change shifts with someone,” she sighed.

“No. That’s not what you said. You said something else,” I said.

“No. I said what I just said what I said,” she said.

“No. You said your shift is almost over,” I said.

“No. You misheard me. Either way that’s not what I meant,” she said, while sitting nearby me on an illusionary chair.

Its pointless to argue with her.

She slipped up.

It almost sounded like she’s actually somehwere else…and…

“What was your name again?” I asked.

“You named me Lucy remember?” she said.

“But what was your name before that?” I asked.

She scowled and sulked with her hands on her hips after getting up out of the chair. “You can’t trick me again. I won’t fall for it.”

Something strange is going on.

Its been a few days. I’d healed up a bit, but things are still touch and go.

I began to check my status screen.

Skills; Survival, Mana Sensing, [Censored], Summoned Danger Sense projected illusion, defense(new!), Evade, Smash
Traits; Memories have been censored, blessing of the heavens (new!)

Huh?

How did I get that new trait?

‘Blessing of the Heavens’? What’s it do?

When I clicked on it, it says the description is censored. But that’s even weirder since my other skills aren’t censored.

I also acquired the defend skill. That was obviously from the last few days working up combat with the giant wasps and the ants.

I need to figure out how to survive this place!

I have to work harder! And do more!

I have to…

I need more skills and resources.

Yesterday I killed two hornets, twice. It seems like the giant hornets have come this way twice yesterday. They hadn’t done two patrols a day up here before now. They seem intent on getting easier prey somewhere else, and that’s keeping me safe. But if at some point the other prey gets more scarce they will surely investigate up here then. Basic hunting behaviors of animal nesting circles.

And also yesterday, things got worse in other ways. I found out there’s three giant hornet nests near me, not just one. One is on the east side of the meadow about a mile or two away. Another one is a half a mile south of that one. I’d missed the second one because they sometimes fight with the first nest that I’d discovered.

But the cliff face is on my south side and my west side, so there’s nothing that can approach from there. They have a natural reason to not approach that way due to terrain obstacles. But the mountain is on the north and north east side. The path leading down the back of the mountain goes down the east side through the first hornet nest.

And since they can fly I can’t totally rule out that someday they might come up this way.

There’s some other nest slightly east of the first hornet nest but because its at the edge of the detection zone I can’t tell what it is yet. Plus, that whole area is full of woods and forest stuff.

So I can’t even leave the area! I’m literally trapped and boxed in!

If it weren’t for the fish in the brook I’d have some real problems here!

Now I’m starting to worry.

But I’m collecting more map data.

“So what do you want to do today?” Lucy asked.

“Survive…” I said dourly.

“Oh come on. Don’t be such a pessimist,” she said.

“…” I didn’t even know what to say in response.

I think surviving was a positive response. And quite reasonable.

I ate some fish after fishing. Its a nice morning.

I’m glad my clothes are warm. That helps a lot, in the chilly mornings.

By now the clock says its about 10:23 AM.

I began to try to circulate my mana better and practice.

“Hey can you teach me something Lucy? A skill maybe?” I asked.

“In your dreams,” she said flatly and frowning.

“Come on. Please!”

“No.”

“But…”

“I said no!”

Whatever…

I went back to the tutorials for magitek.

I’d wanted to wait and get my stats up first…but I can’t. If I wait any longer…

Whew…

“Monster encounter incoming!” Illusionary Lucy suddenly said while standing up fast.

Oh shit.

3 giant hornets today!

Luckily I’m prepared. But its still going to be hard.

I threw a spear at the first hornet, hitting it for -12 damage before they got close. My second spear hit another one in the body for -11 damage. (Thank goodness that I’d been practicing!)

“Now Lucy,” I said.

Then I had to kite them over the meadow in a retreat while Lucy tries to ‘attack’ the hornets enough to get their attention. If she looks like she’s attacking and trying to be between them and me it can work a lot of the time.

By the time the battle is over I’m heaving and hurt bad.

Shit. I might die. This was a miracle anyway that I’m not already a goner.

My health bar says 04/100.

Jeez, I almost died.

Four hornets are dead. One of them had come over hearing the commotion from nearby. This has already been rough.

“I can’t believe you are alive,” Lucy told me.

“Are you disappointed?” I asked.

“I’m not heartless. I just want to do different projects,” she said with a bit of attitude and while looking like she’s doing her nails.

“Uh huh. Sure.”

“Really. I-I don’t want you to get hurt. But I want to go to a more peaceful world to assist in,” she said while following me around. I think she’s trying to give me a sort of apologetic response, but she’s sort of clueless.

“Are you going to bandage that up?” she asked.

“What do you think I’m doing right now, you back seat driver,” I told her.

“Whatever…” she walked off.

I managed to get my wounds bound up using some materials I’d salvaged but this isn’t good at all.

Huh?

I have a notification in my status window! Yes!

[Bonus hidden level allocation for ‘overdrive XP attempt’!]

I click on it.

The description basically says that I ‘over XPed’ before choosing my class.

“What?! You got that? You aren’t supposed to know about that. How did you find a hidden feature? You aren’t supposed to even be able to access that. My boss isn’t going to be happy,” Lucy is giving me an odd suspicious look.

“How did you know about that?” she asked while she’s interrupting my thoughts.

Right…

First, I’m trying to give myself first aid. But I want to see what the reward is for doing this. And there is a reward.

Ping!

[First Aid skill acquired!] shows up in my status screen. Plus, the same notification tells me I get a +1 to health regen, and +1 health stat from getting the First Aid skill!

Oh thank goodness. This is a life saver!

“You sure are a cheater, you know that? Its only supposed to give you +1 bonus stat for getting First Aid. Something is wrong with the system,” she said frowning and trying to look over my shoulder.

“Hey cut it out. Just do your job and help me out. You’re supposed to be on my side. Keep a look out,” I told her.

“I don’t have to be on your side,” she argued.

“Yes you do. You’re my summoned skill girl. If I can’t depend on you its like there’s no sun in the sky,” I said to her, bewildered by her piss poor attitude.

“I’m flagging an administrator. It shouldn’t be giving you extra stats for this. We’ll get this fixed right now. Then we’ll see who’se in the wrong,” she said acting pouty.

Ah shit.

It seems like she wants to wreck it for me. Seriously, just how heartless she was when I’m basically almost dead with that attitude tells you she’s a real winner of a personality. Not.

And then she’s talking to someone I can’t see protesting that my status screen is broke.

Damn.

I’m afraid to even open my quest rewards in front of her. Plus, why did it let her see my status screen when its in stealth mode?

Something weird is going on here.

At some point her holographic display disappeared.

!

WHAT?!!

I have no detection ‘skill turret’ active?!

WTF!~

When I tried to reactivate the skill, it says ‘server under maintenance’ in big bold red text and red caution sign design.

“What the hell,” I said.

I tapped the skill a few more times but still got the error message and sound.

That’s not good. She’s my detection grid!

I opened up my quest rewards for the ‘Overdrive XP’ quest or whatever it is.

[+1 bonus skill. +2 bonus stats earned from Overdrive XP hidden pre-level!] the system said.

Nice!

I opened up my stat allocation.

OK…it won’t let me put the bonus stats in ‘health regeneration’ (per day). I put one of them in wisdom for magitek stats, as it seems that’s what I’m hear for. And then I put the other one in constitution, as I wouldn’t mind a few more health stat points.

But if I hadn’t been wounded I’d have put them in wisdom or intelligence instead.

My health and max health stats go up by +3. My max mana goes up by +1. And my mana regen stat went up by +1. My health regeneration stat did not go up though; I frowned.

‘So that’s how it is huh?’ I thought.

Then I was trying to not cough up blood. I’m in bad shape right now. It will be hard to get through the night.

I can’t wait any more on opening up the magitek black box, I thought.

I hurriedly opened up the black box.

Fortunately it has a few free beginner items. There’s a small health potion there. And a small mana potion.

I drank the free small health potion. The current health bar goes up by +30!

Sweet! Thank you! I might not die now. Maybe…

That might help a lot. It might even be enough up again for me to survive!

As I opened up the second black box the program is activated again.

[Scanning…please wait…]

[…]

[…]

[Subject has multiple job classes available! Reccomended job class; Specialist Wizard kit.]

But then I’m surprised when it didn’t give me a choice at all. It chose for me!

[Error! Restrictions on soul binding in effect. Removing system paremeter violator candidates…]

[Loading please wait…]

[Loading please wait…processing…]

[System choices adjusted. (1) kit available…]

Damn…

What did it give me? And how did it choose for me?

And probably that wizard kit?

Well I would have liked that anyway so its not a bad thing…I guess.

But then I think I passed out as the ray from the black box was altering my status screen and overloading my system.

[Loading please wait…]

[Standby for system reboot…]

When I woke up there’s another woman standing over me, wearing the same gear and equipment as Lucy. But its not Lucy. Wow she’s pretty. But not ass hole pretty.

Lucy the bitch…

Fuck Lucy. I’m glad its not her.

“Hey…are you OK?” she asked. She kicked me lightly in the side but not hard. It was almost playful. And it was also nice and sweet also, which thoroughly shocked me. I didn’t answer her right away because of it.

“Who are you?” I asked sitting up.

“I’ve been sent to replace Lucy. Apparently she wasn’t doing her job. And was screwing up also. She isn’t supposed to be trying to get you hurt or killed or avoid giving you correct advise also,” she said.

“I thought it was odd about her attitude being so obvious in dislike,” I said.

“I’m so sorry. That wasn’t supposed to happen. Truly, I regret that I wasn’t here earlier,” she sounded motherly.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“You can call me Alice. A pleasure,” she said.

But my hand passed through hers when we both forgot that we couldn’t shake hands.

“Oh. I forgot,” she laughed.

“Me too.”

Wow.

She’s hot. She’s good looking like Lucy, and even has a similar build. But her innocence and mother like qualities are so wonderful that coupled with her appearance its like an angel has landed! She’d even look the part if she had white wings to complement that blue eyed blonde look.

She also has on a sort of odd looking travel skirt, and a white blouse with dark leather pointed boots and a belt satchel kit around her waist, not to mention a small mini-backpack hanging from her back. She looks almost like she’d fit with living in this place; like a traveling adventurer’s clothes kit. Her thighs are exposed to tempt me with, showing skin between the knee boots where the knee cap comes out to meet the top of her thighs where the fancy travelers skirt ends. (If she bends over that outfit would be risky. But it doesn’t really show cleavage much.)

“So your health doesn’t look good. What’s your status?” she asked.

I explained the situation, describing it as desperate.

A few minutes passed.

“I see then. OK, have you checked your new magitek job kit?” she asked.

“I was about too,” I said.

“OK. Let’s do this. Please look at it now. I’ll try to help but…actually I’m brand new at this and know about as much as you did. They put me in as a newbie. Sorry,” she apologized.

But she did mention something about the fact that the previous Lucy should have told me about the newbie health potion, and she’s upset that she didn’t.

I pulled up my new status screen window.

It seems that I had a lot of unapplied XP already, beyond the limit needed for the Overdrive XP. And this is why my level has jumped to 3 right away. I have no idea why it gave me so many cool skills right up front though.

“Huh? What in the world is going on with this build? Something isn’t right here,” Alice stated.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“It shouldn’t give you advanced element affinities right from the start. You are supposed to have to work at it. It should have probably not give you the intermediate versions also. But I’m not sure on that. I might have to ask my boss later,” she said confused.

“What does it mean?” I asked.

“Just who are you exactly? Where did you come from before now?” she frowned at me with her hands on her hips. She’s now giving me a suspicious look.

“I don’t know,” I said.

“Do you remember who your parents are? Anything?” she asked.

I shook my head. “I was hoping you could help me figure that out,” I answered back.

“I’ll be demoted if you die the first week with me,” she frowned.

“So you’ll be with me long term then? Maybe more than a week?” I asked.

She shook her head also on that which bothered me. I’d hoped to not be alone. “I’m going to be with you per the system contract for only 2 more days.”

“What?! But there’s no towns here?! What am I supposed to do?! This place is crazy hard to be in. And I’m surrounded by shit that wants to kill me,” I cried.

“That is a predicament. But you were only supposed to get the system help for 7 days beyond a certain point when you were working up magic. They let you have a few extra days for some unknown reason, probably the blessing of heaven trait. Who knows why really. But either way its not up to me. I have a boss that’s giving me orders. And I already have a file for another guy to help right after you that I’m trying to get ready for also, on another world,” she shrugged.

“I’m so sorry Javen,” Alice sounded emotionally upset too while trying to comfort me.

Damn.

“And when that happens…what will happen to that danger sense turret skill?” I asked.

“It will be gone. You’ll have to take care of business yourself then. It shouldn’t have even let you change that skill even. I’m sorry,” she frowned.

“Oh jeez,” I said.

“Yeah, so you better work hard to level up fast. But that will be hard with your health bar like that huh?” she sighed. “I hope you don’t die. But you have all the cards stacked against you right now.”

“Why didn’t they start me in the closest town?” I asked.

She shrugged. “I don’t know. That’s weird too. They should have done that.”

“You better hurry and try to figure out your skills. We never know when another giant hornet patrol or something else will occur,” she added.

“OK, so how do I…?” I asked and stopped feeling overwhelmed.

“Try that new skill there, create item,” she said.

“How do I do that?”

“Go to the skills tab and click on the skill. Do that and then just go through it,” she said.

“It doesn’t make me do a spell formula or something like an incantation?” I asked.

“In the old days it did. But when magic became magitek a lot changed. Now you don’t need to do formulas, but you still need to understand them and how they work. You can also create spell formulas which become custom skills. So I reccomend you learn how to do them and to study them. But…you might need a mentor and a town for that,” she said.

“I see…” I sighed.

She laughed. “You look overwhelmed.”

“I feel that way,” I admitted.

“Just try to work with your skills. If helps you any, your starter kit is truly amazing if you can get past this hump. But honestly your build type isn’t a traditional mage. You aren’t like a fire ball blaster or nuke mage. It seems you’ll have to be really careful and find a way to exploit,” she warned.

“OK…”

“Try using the skill,” she coached.

So I opened up the skill tab.

There the skill [Create Item] is there.

“Shouldn’t it show me a mana cost?” I asked when studying it over.

There in the skill box there’s no mana cost written. And there’s not one written in the description area also. The description says [Using the power of life and creation, you can cast formulas to ‘build’.]

“That’s weird,” she said.

“Is it?”

“Well I’m speaking figuratively. I’m still pretty new at this. But I’ve not seen any other ‘students’ with skills like that. I’m not sure what it means. Its definitely different,” she said evasively.

‘Is she lying to me?’ I wondered.

She said she was new at this but she acts a bit confident. Plus, she has another guy to mentor in another area right after me. And if she were new wouldn’t someone have to check on her first?

“Well go ahead and give it a try,” she said.

“All right.”

I clicked on the skill.

Another sub menu pops up.

[What would you like to create?] pops up in the window.

Then there’s a drop down menu.

[Life, Weapon, Armor, Tool, Resource, Material,]

“What the hell…?!” I mumbled.

“That’s got to be a glitch. Create life?! You…can’t do that as a normal human,” she said disturbed with wide eyes and in complete shock. She’d also backed up a step from almost stumbling also.

I shrugged.

“Well it is what it is,” I said.

“Um, try something simple first. You don’t want to overexert yourself on the first try when you don’t know what your limits are,” she coached.

“Something simple. Try creating something you know about and have seen before. Remember the first time you use a skill it could fail easily. And the more you use the skill the more the success chance is for other things after you figure it out. You want to have a success quickly to work this out. Plus, when you do create something don’t be discouraged if it has a summon timer of only a few hours,” she said.

“So I’m not actually creating, I’m renting?” I asked.

She shrugged. “Most spells work on a timer. It would be problematic if a fire wizard summons fire and it won’t stop even after the town is destroyed, or remains there until the end of time,” she adds.

“That’s true huh…”

“You could also picture something you use everyday,” she added.

I pictured an axe. One of those big black factory made bad ass cool looking ones like in…huh, was I remembering something?

An image of what I was picturing in my mind startled me as it appeared in the box.

“Wow,” she said.

“That’s good right?” I asked.

“Well its not done yet. You need to complete it. But in theory the more complex the item is the more mana it will cost you. At level 3, I doubt it will actually let you create an axe. More likely it will make you pick something else like a dagger,” she adds.

“But its strange that you have access to that particular design, which is definitely not from this world,” she muttered mostly to herself.

But to our shock it didn’t make me pick something else.

The woodcutter axe is long and has a big handle with a very sharp blade. Its the factory black steel bad ass version from whatever that other world was… It looks like a very good quality piece. Shiny, cool, sleek design.

If I was a goblin and wanted to die, I could die in honor on a bad ass axe like this fucker is…yeah.

And the box window in the create item window says it will cost 200 mana to summon.

“What…wow, it might let you make that,” she said in awe.

[You have picked a woodcutter’s axe to create using the create item skill. Click [Yes] or [No] to proceed.]

“So I just click on yes?” I asked.

“What in the world…its letting you do this?! And I don’t see a timer window or anything in the box or the formula area. It should say how many hours it will last for,” she said.

I clicked OK.

There’s a whoosh of energy and power…

I was even a bit frightened and worried that it would be noticed by other things nearby. In fact it scared the crap out of me.

And as the energy is settling there’s a brand new super sharp steel manufactured cool looking black bad ass version factory made woodcutting axe on the ground in front of me. The axe handle is almost three feet long, and it looks like something that’s come out of a manufacturing plant, and not something medieval at all. The blade is large and wide but very sharp, though not too wide. All of it has an interesting black color on both the blade and handle also. It almost looks sci-fi-ish though it isn’t.

Wow.

“What in the world are you? A complex quality axe like that should take years to know how to summon or create. And you did it on the first try? Plus, why is it your axe doesn’t look like a blacksmith did it, and instead looks too perfect?” she asked giving me odd looks.

I pulled up the woodcutters axe.

This is a game changer. With this I could actually cut wood instead of only forage dead wood. Pretty sure I can cut those fucking trash giant hornet bastards too!

And its a significant defense upgrade!

“Wow. You are pretty amazing,” she said clapping and smiling.

I’m not sure what’s going on…

But I’m pretty sure I’m not supposed to have godlike power like this. Something about my wizard kit is broken and overpowered even if I don’t have the full on offense element power that other mages and wizards have.

I need to figure out where I came from and why I’m really here.

And why does my age stat say ‘NA’ as in ‘not applicable’?
